Is there any special consideration when converting a user email to a distribution group?

We had a general delivery email that went to one person, so I created a user named generaldelivery and gave it an exchange email of generaldelivery@ourdomain.com, now we have multiple people who need those emails and the easiest way to control that is to change the user to a distribution group - what is the best way to do this? If possible, we would like to keep all the emails currently in the mailbox, but if we must lose them we can probably live with that by archiving before deletion.

Any tips?

Distribution lists aren't mailbox, so they don't "contain" emails. They simply direct emails to the member's mailboxes.

You have two options:
1. Create a Public Folder; grant the intended members rights; remove the email address from the user and set it for the Public Folder; migrate the mail into the Public Folder.

2. Remove the email address from the user; create a distribution list; add the email address to the DL; archive & purge the old mail.
