Hi all,
I am and have been a programmer for a while but am new to flash, so bear with the newbie question.

I can make graphics and get them to move, fade, scale, etc. but I cannot do it with text. i assume I have to convert or something but my tutorials dont address it or I don't get it ....I am sure it is an easy one.

Thanks in advance

o.k. Maybe I did not ask correctly,

Here is the procedure I use for a graphic with motion...lets assume I want a box to spin a circle
then I will follow with what I do for a word that I want to spin a circle...then tell me where I erred.
I am going to be very rudimentary here I know there are faster ways to make symbols etc.

Make graphic symbol of a box

1. Select INSERT->NEW SYMBOL
2. Select the GRAPHIC radio button
3. Name the graphic BOX
4. Edit symbol BOX
5. Draw a box
6. Group the outline and the filling
7. Go to document edit mode

Make movie Symbol with BOX symbol in it

1. Select INSERT->NEW SYMBOL
2. Select the MOVIE radio button
3. Name the movie BOX MOVIE
4. Edit symbol BOX MOVIE
5. Drag Symbol BOX into Frame 1
6. Make keyframe at frame 20
7. Select frame 15
8. Select Create Motion Tween
9. Select CCW rotation
10. Rotate 1 time
11. Return to Document edit mode
12. Drag symbol BOX MOVIE into frame one
13. Click TEST MOVIE

This works for a box!!!

Now I repeat the procedure with the text instead...

Make graphic symbol of a word

1. Select INSERT->NEW SYMBOL
2. Select the GRAPHIC radio button
3. Name the graphic WORD
4. Edit symbol WORD
5. Using Type Tool type the word "TEXT"
6. Group the word "TEXT"
7. Go to document edit mode

Make movie Symbol with BOX symbol in it

1. Select INSERT->NEW SYMBOL
2. Select the MOVIE radio button
3. Name the movie WORD MOVIE
4. Edit symbol WORD MOVIE
5. Drag Symbol WORD into Frame 1
6. Make keyframe at frame 20
7. Select frame 15
8. Select Create Motion Tween
9. Select CCW rotation
10. Rotate 1 time
11. Return to Document edit mode
12. Drag symbol WORD MOVIE into frame one
13. Click TEST MOVIE

When I do this I get a blink of the word in its original position and nothing else.

Now correct my errors.

I believe I have made a graphic symbol and put text into it.

I believe I have made a movie clip and put the graphic symbol with the text into the clip.

Sorry for the Verbose question / description, but this seems too easy for me to miss.

again any help would be appreciated.

Yes - you're right. Weird. But I think it might have something to do with the way you create your movies. Try this.

• Write "TEXT" in your scene (in frame1) and convert it to a MOVIE - Insert>Convert to Symbol : (F8) --- call it TEXT2MOVIE

• From the Library double-click your new movie symbol "TEXT2MOVIE", and enter the symbol-editing mode. Add your animation (the rotation etc) and return to your Scene (Document Edit mode)

• Test movie and it'll work OK

I again tried doing what you said, but this time "broke apart" the text (Modify>Break Apart) WITHIN the movie, bit still I got - again - the text on one frame only, apart from the letter X which rotated nicely!

Veeeeeery strange.
