I have a site that has 3 merlin systems connected via PtoP T1s. They want to switch to Voip but want to keep the T1s to to put the VoIP traffic on only. Here is the question: can I just put in some routers and connect the T1s and not have to get the phone company involved to do something to the T1s?

This isn't a merlin question but a T1 question. I hope I am making this clear.

Thanks.

If the T1s are ESF/B8ZS then the carrier should not need to do anything in order for you to change the traffic that flows across them.

Why??

From your description what advantage do you or your client expect?

The Merlin Legend/Magix do not have VOIP connecting arrangements. If you want to use some of the channel bandwidth for data transmission, that can be done using the appropriate access device/routers, otherwise you have the best in a transmission facility money can buy! The VOIP won't give you the same voice transmission quality as the DS1 setup you described in your post above.

The phone company does not need to be involved to make a change, unless one of the DS1 parameters needs changing.

Syquest: 1)The customer wants to be able to log in as any user at any of the 3 locations. The system I am proposing can do that. 2) the customer does not want any voice traffice on the WAN so they already pay for these PtoP's and are comfortable continuing to do so.

mforrence: Just curious, why is ESF/B8ZS OK but D4/AMI not? My guess is it is a ESF/B8ZS or the Magix would have problems doing its own PRI for the current networking?

If you are planning to replace the phone system, whether you can use the DS1s will depend on the new phone system's requirements/options.

Your answer above is confusing, you did not mention anything about a WAN in your original post or its connectivity.

You could do PRI on a DS1 ckt configured as SF/B8ZS because the B8ZS line code is what gives the channels the 64K bandwidth, and PRI requires 64K channels. Extended Super Frame provides overhead to the pipe so-to-speak for admin functions.

Are you planning on completely getting rid of the Merlin system? It sounds like you're proposing a completely new solution but just want to keep the T1s in place. If that's the case, just terminate the T1s on routers, connect the routers to your VoIP network and away you go.
