We are currently running a system developed with PB 8.0. I am working on converting the system from accessing an Informix 9 database on an HP 9000 server to an Oracle 10g database on a SUN Solaris server. The applications were designed to run on Win 95 and Win 2K client PCs. However, due to Sybase no longer supporting PB 8.0, a mandatory upgrade to Win XP for all personnel in the near future, and potential compatibility issues between PB 8.0 and Win XP and Oracle 10g, we are thinking that we need to upgrade to PB 10.x as we make the other changes.

We have successfully connected the application to Oracle 10g by installing Oracle Connect S/W on the client and changing some code. Most of the SQL code is fairly straightforward and works fine against Oracle 10g once syntax changes like ‘ instead of “ are made. Our biggest problem is lots of Informix specific syntax and code that has to be identified and changed so it works with Oracle. I have actually successfully modified, generated and run some applications using PB 8.0 installed on Win XP. I am still getting the following dwwin.exe – Application Error when running one of the applications: “The exception Breakpoint has been reached. (0x80000003) occurred in the application at location 0x7c901230”. This error is immediately followed by a PowerBuilder Application Execution Error (R0003): “Application Terminated. Error: Array boundary exceeded”. However, I got the same errors when running another application but was able to fix it by fixing Oracle database problems (I think it was because a table did not exist).

PB 8.0 has worked fairly solidly most of the time running on Win XP. However, occasionally it will just stop, give me a very vague error that basically just says it is shutting down and promptly shut down (I can’t remember the exact situation when it does this). I have been wondering if this problem is being caused by some kind of Win XP incompatibility but I don’t know for sure.

Since I am new to PB development, I want to know the opinion of some PowerBuilder Gurus who have had experience with PB 8.x – 10.x. Do you think we can get by Ok without upgrading to PB 10.x or is it something we definitely need to do? If the upgrade is necessary, about how much do you think it would cost for one license (just a ballpark figure)?

Any information and help you can give me or direct me to will be greatly appreciated.
