convert null values to default

The check box convert database values to default is inactive; in what circumstances is this hapening?
The convert other values to default is active

This will be inactive if 'Perform Grouping on Server' is checked on the datbase menu.

What type of database? Are oyu connecting thru ODBC or natively?
