convert ms dos to word 97

I haven't been able to open old ms dos files in word 97 properly. I have downloaded the converters from microsoft, but I still get weird symbols mixed in with some readable letters. Can someone help me? I know there must be a way, but I can't figure it out.

What kind of old MS-DOS files? You mean old MS-DOS Word files? If so, that wouldn't surprise me. Fonts have changed dramatically over the hears. You may just need to select everything and change the font until the symbols now make sense.
