Cannot open a database created with a previous version of your application.

That's what I get when I try to:
Open
Import from or
Link to

any mdb file on our network from Access 2016.

Is there really no way at all to convert/import/link those databases to be viewed in Access 2016?

Does anyone know of any free converter tools?

FYI, here is a Microsoft reference on the topic:

They pretty much say you have to use a prior version to save to accdb. I would LOVE it if anyone has any better ideas.

What access version did you have previously? The problem refers to only access 97 mdb file format, newer mdb files (2000-2003) can be opened in 2016 without problem. So if you have any 2000-2003 version, convert mdb (97) to mdb (2000-3003), by now there is no need to use accdb format.
Keep copy of mdb files, access 2016 changes custom groups in database window.

I have no idea what version of Access was used. It was created at new employer well before my time. It's probably not worth bothering with it. If I ever need it, I'll just use a computer with an older version of Office to convert it.

The other way (which normally works pretty good) is to open a blank DB in Access 2016 and then import everything from the old database.

Thanks, but that doesn't work in this situation either. I tried before posting the question.
