Convert image to SVG result in large filesize

Hi,

I'm using Macintosh 9 with Illustrator 10. I'm trying to convert a multipage postscript file to SVG.

I've tried distilling the postscript to single page PDF then save as SVG in Illustrator. I've also tried GhostView to get a single page PNG then save as SVG in Illustrator.

The problem is both ways resulted in large SVG files (even if I save as SVGZ, the file size is still large). The image is from a page in the phone directory listings.

Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks!
