Convert Illustrator CS to 10 1

I have a piece of artwork from a customer that was built in Illustrator CS as a cmyk. I need to change it to 3 spot colors but cannot open it in Illustrator 10. Any ideas? Is this even possible?

Have the customer save the file out as a legacy file so can open in 10 - that's what we have to do here.

Only thing I know of.
