Convert from PDF to text

Does anyone know of freeware that will convert a PDF file into text or that can search text within a PDF? Or can Acrobat convert a PDF to text? What about ActivePDF, which we have a license for? Can it convert a pdf into text or search a PDF to pull a string out of a PDF?

You don't say which version of Acrobat, but in the later versions (certainly from V5) there is a Text Select Tool on the menu bar, which will allow selection of a page or column of text, which can then be copied and pasted into a word editor. If you want the whole text, you can choose to 'save as' TXT or RTF although you need to have the fonts used installed on your computer.

I'm using 6.0, but I'm looking for a freeware converting tool, as I will need to convert many documents and extract a string using a unix command.

The 'Save As' function in Acrobat 6 allows you to save directly to a variety of formats including .doc and .txt
