Hello all. When you click/drag on a corner point of a path with the convert tool it changes to a smooth point with direction lines on both sides of the anchor point. Is it possible to convert a corner point so that the curve only occurs on one side of the anchor point. In Paint Shop Pro (90% of people reading this just cringed) you can select the corner anchor point (they call it a node) and then choose 'curve after' or 'curve before'. I'm looking for a similar function.

I'm not looking for a workaround, I want to know if this can be done in one step.

I'll post a diagram in case my explanation wasn't so good.

You can apply the round corners filter as an effect or filter. As an effect you can adjust the radius. It only works on the whole shape though so you may have to scissor any corner you dont want rounded and re-join them afterward.

1. Use the Convert Anchor Point tool to convert to smooth.
2. Using the same tool move one direction line to restore part of the curve to what it was before.
3. Use the same tool or the Direct Selection Tool to move the other direction line as required.

Try it on a rectangle. Result 3 straight sides and one curved side. Does this help?

Well thanks for your help but both of those suggestions are definately what I'd class as 'work arounds' where as I wanted to know if what I described could be done just as I described it. I hope Adobe will consider this feature for a future version of Illustrator.

Seems like that would be a waiste of adobe's resources as I dont see being universally useful. Adobe only wants to make palletes for frequently required manipulation. They do however need to seriously rethink future versions. You should at least be able to round one corner at a time instead of every corner on the shape. Maybe just make tool out of the filter. You need to be able to do more live edits too instead of doing everything through dialoge boxes.

Hello

I was just over at Adobes web site looking at the Illustrator Forum and I stumbled across something that answered my original post here and I thought I would share it in case others didnt know about this:

When you have a curved segment of a path with two direction lines on an anchor point you can drag one of the direction lines (with the convert point tool) back down onto the anchor point it is stemmed from and it will disappear! Leaving an anchor point thats curved on one side and straight on the other. Exactly what I wanted. I can't believe I never knew this all this time, it's scares me to think what other great functions I don't know about!

Brilliant! I knew Illustrator wouldn't let me down!
