Convert a date time to number

I have a dataset of :-

tblClockingRecords.dteDate

Thios returns the date and time. I want to change this to a number and expected "tonumber" to work but says that the remaining text does not seem to be part of the formula. Any ideas. I intend to concatenate this number when I can get it.

what would todays date, 11/03/09 be converted to?
