Controlling Editions by Revision…

My question/problem relates to finding a means of controlling revisions to each of the multitude of publications that go into making the final Book, which must in itself be controlled by revision, so that each serialized edition can be referred to differently. The importance of revisions is high for our quality control, service and customer reference. Presently we are controlling the Book revision by dating the TOC, which of course, identifies the publications that are in it. As well, each publication has the latest-change date on the uppermost outside corners, so that it is easily viewed for control purposes. The date, on each master page, is manually updated.

Now, we have received a request that the individual publication’s revision dates also show up on the TOC. This would require a third manual entry of the date, and this provokes me to ask if there isn’t a better manner in which I could flag this information.
I would ideally like to replace this procedure with an automatic (simplified) entry which would be repeated in the desired locations, and at the same time, be available to print to TOC. I was even thinking that I could place such a “formula?” elsewhere on the pasteboard. I’ve studied FAQs and discussed it, and now its your turn, if anybody has any idea, please express it, and see if we can’t come up with something.

So… my question is a) is there a better idea of controlling revision information? And b) is there a way of making an automatic entry which can be copied/ repeated?
Thanks for ALL input!

This is a scripting issue. From my experience I have seen that there are few people that understand scripting for PM. The Adobe forums have a scripting section, and some of those people could probably lead you in the right direction. Also, here are a few sites that might help:

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
