Working with logon screens. While surfing finding lots of references to:
1) Goto Control Panel > User Accounts
2) Select "Change the Way Users Log On or Off"
And / or
1) Goto Control Panel > User Accounts
2) Change "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" option

Step 1 - Sure no problem. Step 2 - Just where these are is a bit of a mystery.

I'm unable to find "Change the Way ..." on any of 4 different PCs. I found the "Users must enter ..." on one PC and for grins, turned it on. After selecting 'Apply' the check box disappeared and now can't determine how to get it back. Log off/on, reboot, the usual stuff isn't working.

OS: WinXP SP3
Logged on user is part of the 'Administrators' group for the PC.

I've surfed a bit trying to find some registry setting, but no luck so far. Tried doing a search under this form and did not find references to this.

They should be just above the Icons for the Users in the machine. Its not really hidden here:

What is it you want to accomplish:
1. Get the Welcome screen like:

Or

2. Get the "domain" Win2K style login:

I agree they should be there - but they're not. At the risk of sounding like a complete nubie, I can't seem to figure out how to paste a screen shot in here of what is showing up. I can switch between classic and category views and the a fore indicated icons are not there. In your category image, I'm only showing the "Create a new account" arrow.

Upload the image to somewhere accessible online like an image hosting site, and the just paste the img URL in an img tag:

[ignore]
image.jpg
[/ignore]

With that said, is this machine now or has it ever been part of a domain? There might be a Group Policy removing the options.

There is an alternative you can try, if you like, it is obtained via typing Control Userpasswords2 in the Start Run box. In the resulting window you will see a checkbox for "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer".

Vacunita - Looked at the page source and seen your 'img' reference in the html code. I can do that but this isn't my site so once this is over, I should remove the image:
View if using 'classic' scheme
user_accounts_clas.jpg

and via 'category'
user_accounts_cat.jpg

You can see on the classic version, the "Users must enter user name ..." checkbox is there (unchecked). On another PC, it was there but went away once I checked it and hit apply.

Also, on the category version, the two extra green arrows you have on your version just are not there. And this is the basis of my original query: Where are they and how do I get them back?

Yes - All of the PCs I'm working with are part of a domain. The group policy idea has merit - I can see there being some flag and/or bit not being in sync with everything else, so the fact that I can see the "Users must enter ..." checkbox at all is the real error in this case and when I checked it, things synched up and took it away from me as per group policy (fwiw - I'm a linux guy at heart and subsequently loath group policy) There is a good chance that nobody in the company knows what nuance of group policy has been set to cause this effect.

linney - Yes I am familiar with the command. You'll effectively get the same window(s) as shown above. I know how Windows can have multiple ways of getting to the same thing, but it isn't uncommon for Win to present different options depending on how you call it. So I did try that route (on some systems you'll get a similar window again if you drop the '2' off the end of the command ... same window, just another way to get there)

I'll investigate the GP end of things and report back if I find anything. However in the meantime, if you guys or anyone else has another avenue to look at, I'm ready to hear it. Thanks.

Click on "User Accounts" on the Icons on the bottom you are just one step shy of getting there. The Option Should be there.

With that said, if you are part of a domain, and have to login to said domain, you can't use the Welcome screen. Its an XP limitation. Since the login must specify the Domain to which to log into, and the Welcome screen has no such option.

Some insight - Continuing to surf around I finally found other postings of similar issues. The domain issue kept popping up. I tried logging in locally (again w/ admin rights) and the anticipated icons/checkbox's still do not show up.

I removed the PC from the domain, login, and everything shows up just like in Vacunita's first post. Put the PC back to the domain, they're gone again. Doesn't prove/disprove the group policy theory, but lends credit to it. Also found that while in 'workgroup' mode, 'control userpassword' and 'control userpassword2' would bring up the two versions of the user accounts (classic and category ... don't recall which is which) Oh, found that nusrmgr.cpl is another command (3rd and counting) to bring up the user account screen.

For now I'm going to presume this topic closed. I'll definitely read any replies but will remove my images in a week or so (re: technically I'm using space that isn't mine)

Nope - I'm getting the window that depicts the 'classic' version of user accounts. My hunches are still leaning on either group policy or a context sensitive issue between windows and being part of a domain.

Its likely not a Group Policy. Just the Fact than the domain doesn't allow the usage of the Welcome Screen so Windows removes the option when its joined to a domain, and puts it back when its no longer part of a domain.

Thinking about it, that seems reasonable. If the PC tried to offer the welcome screen with login icons, on a domain there could be several hundred icons or more to select from (up to the limit of your usage license of course :)
