I am unable to boot to my xp home drive, the computer resets/reboots itself and when i have it set as a slave, the computer recognizes new hardware, but the drive does not show up in my computer. if i go to control panel/system/ disk drives it shows up there, but is inaccessible and it says device is working correctly. When I have it as a solo drive, it hangs at mup.sys (thru safe mode). Any help would be appreciated. I have uninstalled Norton goback, but just can not get the drive to boot.

If possible, check the HD with the diagnostics at the manuf's site.
If it fails, then it's probably bad.

If it passes, then reseat the RAM modules. If no good, then try them in different slots.

If no luck, then disconnect all USB devices.
If that works, then reconnect them one at a time until the problem resurfaces. The last one connected is the cause.

If still no luck, then remove all PCI cards.
If that works, then repeat the procedure for the USB devices.

If that does not work, then disconnect all drives except the problem drive.
If that works, then repeat the USB devices procedure.

If no luck, then boot to the Windows XP install CD, and select 'Last Known Good Configuration':
If no good, then do a repair install.

I have tried a number of the options you suggested prior to writing in. The hard drive diag showed no prob. There are no usb devices attached. Still hangs at mup.sys thru safe mode, fixed MBR. just can not boot to the drive. not sure if a virus is present, or drive was hijacked. It does show up in system/control panel and says it is working properly, but the drive seems FUBAR.

Did you try the other suggestions?

Actually, I did not try the others, because this is the 4th different box I am in and the 2nd type of PC (gateway & emachine) and just does not recognize the drive in any circumstance.

From the truth is stranger than fiction file. It now works. After going thru fixboot and fixmbr twice each, and bringing the drive back to the original computer, it is now recognized. Did a virus scan and it had the w32.allim virus in 4 files. This was the third fix boot/fixmbr we went thru, so I don't know if i just got lucky or what, but it seems to be working. Defragging now and going to copy all data off and prob reformat. Thanks for the suggestions and help folks.

You're welcome.
Glad to hear that you were able to fix the problem, and thanks for posting back with the solution.
