Continuous Operation question

Hi, All

According to the manual:

"Continuous Operations provides the ability to backup data files while database applications are running and users are connected. However, in the event of a hard drive failure, if you use Continuous Operations to make backups, you will lose all changes to your data since the last backup. You cannot use Archival Logging and the Maintenance utility Roll Forward command to restore changes to your data files that occurred after the last backup."

So, for example, if the hard drive fails in the middle of continuous operations and the last backup took place the night before, does this mean that all the data entered today is gone?

Any reply would be helpful.

Where in the docs did you see that?
What version of PSQL are you using?

If your hard drive fails to the point of requiring a back up, it probably won't matter what state the file is in.

Are you trying to prepare for failure or is there some other reason for your question (like your seeing an error)?

Hi, mirtheil

1. Advanced Operations Guide - Page 8-21
2. PervasiveSQL V8.6 R2
3. I have just installed Pervasive and have to set up the backups which by the way really suck.

What process are you doing for backups (why do they "really suck")?

I also guess I don't understand the reason for the original question. If a hard drive fails, would expect any data since the last backup, regardless of the application, to be available?

Hi, mertheil

In Oracle, yes because I would have it multplex the archive logs and control files to a separate disk and if available to another server.

I am just backing up data files. I also have to create a list of all the files to back up and point to it in order to go into continuous operation mode.
