Hello Everyone,

I stretched a RJ45 cable through a warehouse to a distance of about 400 feet at which point there is a machine on one end and there used to be a router on the other. With the router at one end, the connection worked fine. The company decided to move the router to a different location roughly 50 feet from the original. So I installed a connector to extend the cable. When I use my rj45 tester, all wires line up and seem to be fine. When I attempt to make a connection through the line, it doesn't work. The machine keeps going on and off, "Network Cable unplugged" and no connection is made.

Any help is appretiated.. Thank you!!

Try "ethernet specifications" as a google search.

ok maybe I'm exagerating with 400 feet..

I know the limits.. and I decided to push them.. I know that 90 meters or 295 feet is the RECOMMENDED max for distance..

I also know a solution would be to put an additional router or hub at the connectors possition.. unfortunetly that's not possible because the room no longer belongs to the client... So I was wondering what some mature professionals could recommend.. I'm sorry I wasn't more specific.

exactly!!

just found out about them from another source..

Do they require a power source?

A repeater will work and it does need a power supply. I have had some success running on cables that are too long or too old by changing the nic to run at 10 mbs and half duplex. Not the proper way to do things but it may work as long at you hub/switch is 10/100. 400 feet would be pushing it though.

it's maybe 350.. In that case, what do you suggest about the join? Should I worry about it.

I wouldn't worry about the extension if thats what you mean. You can wrap it in electrical tape to keep it from slipping out. Have you tried setting it to 10mbs? Not sure this is going to work for you but worth a shot before you buy a repeater.

I'll try that today.. Thanks for the help.. I'll let you guys know how it goes tonight.

No need.. dloz idea worked..

dropped the speed to 10mbs and it works fine..

For all the skeptics, hope this is a lesson learned.. sometimes experience is more valuable than what it says on paper..

dloz - Thanks for your help.
