Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

better yet what is the name of the log file?

generally on log files if you are trying to reduce them....
like the failedlogin, or wtmp, or snmp you need to know why they are growing..
Maybe a bad port? bad cable, someone trying to hack into your system...

who /etc/security/failedlogin (to look what is in it)

cp /dev/null /etc/security/failedlogin (to clear out.)
cp /dev/null /var/adm/wtmp

Let us know which file it is so we may be able to suggest better resolve. If it is
the two above, you can do as it says....

you can cat /dev/null to a open file to truncate it and leave it open.
#>logfile
