Content Index Service won't start in NT 4 Server

When ever our server is booted, the following service does not start. The following is from the event log:<br>

The Content Index service failed to start due to the following error: <br>
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.<br>
<br>
<br>
What is the content index service and why would I need it?<br>
Any suggestions?<br>
