contact id's within lookup

is there any way I can retrieve the ACT! contact id's that are in the current lookup, WITHOUT looping through the current lookup?

In essence, I am creating an Add-on, which when completed, will allow the user to search within the current lookup. At the moment, it has to loop through the current lookup which is highly inefficient, especially when there's a lot of records.
