Hello.
A SCO openserver 5 server of ours keeps loosing the date. I will set it using date -t, but the next day the date will reset. It's very annoying when the server starts to run it's nightly backup in the middle of the day.
It is my understanding that the cmos battery is only used to keep the date/time when main power is off.
Is this correct? What else could cause this?
hmmmm...

You may want to look at your crontabs to see what may be calling a timechange.
Haven't looked into it ever, but I think the hardware clock is polled in the middle of the night to update the OS to the correct time. Ed Fair

What kind of system is it, and how old? If your CMOS clock is actually loosing time while the system is up you may have a motherboard problem, but more likely the clock is being changed by something else. You should check your cron for time synchronization (xntpd) processes.

Another possibility is your time is not being set right to begin with because it is setting it based on the wrong time zone.
