I'm afraid I have the same problem that I had a few years ago. My computer keeps on rebooting over and over again. I can't use the computer at all.
I had to bring it to the store when it last happend. There was something wrong with my operating system back then. They were able to save all my files.
Does anybody know what I could do without having to reinstall Windows XP and losing all my files?

did u try saveboot?
on boot, press F8 to get to the boot options and choose automatic reboot on error disabled, boot normal and post the stop error u get

First of all you need to work out if it's an OS issue or hardware based, see what happens if you download a linux live cd and boot from that, if the system doesn't reboot then it would definitely appear to be OS related, if however it does still reboot then you have a hardware issue.

If it's an OS issue then I would ask yourself why this happens, are you getting virus infected due to inadequate protection? are you shutting down correctly etc?

Give the livecd approach a go and take it from there.

SimonD.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

I am now logged on as administrator in safe mode. I'm not that great with computers when it comes to this kinda stuff but where can I download a linux live CD?
I should mention as well that my computer was unable to send a error report (not sure what you call it in English) and I got a message that there could be a software, harware or OS problem.

so it´s working in safe mode, good.
unmark automatic reboot, boot normal and post the bsod code (i.e irq_less_or_equal 0001230a ........ .......)

Okay this is all a bit weird but I brought the computer back to a previous recovery point and it seems to work now. Should I still post the BSOD code?

I probably should mention I never actually got a blue screen of death. It went straight to black and rebooting. I believe I had my computer for about 4 years now. My brother is in the computer business and mentioned that I should reinstall Windows XP ( apparently I should have done that every year). I should also mention my computer won't allow me to make a back-up... I don't know why. I thought the easiest way to do everything was to put all my files on an external harddrive an d reinstall Windows XP. Is there anyway I can keep programs and their settings when reistalling Windows XP?

Oh I forgot to mention this as well... it might be important. Ever since I installed service pack 3 it does windows update everyday. To me that seems excessively much.

never actually got a blue screen of death" normal when reboot on error is set
good that it works now, if you wanne know why and how the error occured post bsod, check eventviewer for errors.....
"Is there anyway I can keep programs and their settings when reistalling Windows XP" progs no, but setting some, when u use the easy transfer wizard (all progs/accessories/system progs/transfer settings or so (im german and donno the correct expression)
automatic updates is configured to check every day for new updates by default

Random reboots are caused either by 1) heat 2) Power Supply issues 3) Bad Os w/ BSOD

To see if it's the last item, right-click My Computer==>Properties==>Advanced tab==>Startup and Recovery==>Settings and under "System Failure" check the first two items but un-tick "Automatically Restart". This will give you time to see the error.

The way you describe it, it sounds like a driver problem, we shall see.

Sp3, do you have an AMD processor by any chance?

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

Hi Wahnula. I can't do that because I can only enter the computer in safe mode. In safe mode you do not have that option (or maybe I just can't find it). I also had an option of the computer showing me the error message but for some reason my computer won't do it. It goes straight to shutting down.

Sympology I'm not sure what kinda processor I have.

Hi forget the previous reply.

This is de BSOD code I got.

Tammster - did you sort this? You said
Okay this is all a bit weird but I brought the computer back to a previous recovery point and it seems to work now
. But then later
I can't do that because I can only enter the computer in safe mode

So is it only working in safe mode? Have you tried system restore back even further than you tried previously?

And you never gave any history. Did this just start happening or was it after you added/removed any hardware/software? If it just started happening, likely hardware item is failing - so you'd need to eliminate all the good bits to find the bad.

If after change made, likely change caused the issue - system restore should sort it. I suspect a hardware issue, but more info would be nice (particularly, you've sorted it!)

Dubbele fout!!!

and for the english speakers,

General causes of "STOP 0x0000007F" errors

To determine an approximate cause, examine the parameters at the top of the STOP screen:
**STOP 0x0000007F (0x000000XX, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

from above: Foutencontrole: 0x1000007f (0x00000008, 0x80042000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).

0x00000008 Double Fault
