I have a dumb terminal on a Sun Enteprise 3000, I cat'd a file and screwed the Wyse terminal which is now display garbage, line feed characters etc. How do i get it back as I know a on/off will send a ctrl break and kill the system I can't do this and I can't easily down the box. Can I just use the reset option in the Wyse setup or will this also send a break and send it into prom.
Hmmm, tricky. If it's still screwed, start by checking the settings on the Wyse are all correct. Not got one to hand, but I think the "Display" section is a good place to start. Also look around for the "Controls" or "Control Codes" option, and make sure this is set to "Interpret", and not "Display".

Once you've done this, try logging in as "root". You may see garbage displayed as you type, but if the layout looks OK, then you're nearly there... Type "tput sgr0" and hit <Return>. Then enter "tput rmacs" and hit <Return>. Hopefully, the screen should now look OK...
As a final move, if the above doesn't work, log in elsewhere and type "tput -Twyse50 >/dev/console".
If none of the above work, I'd be tempted to do a reboot when possible.
Good luck :)

The other thing you can try when terminals play up like that is to type in stty sane.
Dave Hamilton
dhamilton@gio.com.au
