Just installed Debian 3.0 (currently upgrading to unstable) on a box with a 21 monitor... no window manager, and the console has wretched resolution.

Where I change this? I remember something about adding a framebuffer command (I think) to my lilo.conf on an older system, but I (and google) are drawing blanks.

When you boot, boot with:

boot vga=793

in lilo.conf add:

# Specifies the VGA text mode at boot time. (normal, extended, ask, <mode>)
#
# vga=ask
# vga=9
#
vga=793

Cheers.

Excellent... in the spirit of understanding could you tell me what 793 means?

Actually, I don't know, the only think that I know is that it works!

I can not find info about that.

Cheers.

Better you insert the line 'vga=ask' first.
This will give you a 'select screen' where you may specify a resolution and let the system probe for some resolutions.

Later, when you found your favorite solution, you may specify it with an code in the way Chacalinc describes. But it may be something different from '793'.
