Console Port on 2514 not responding 1

I purchased two 2514s from a guy off ebay. Neither console ports are responding so I like to believe it's something I'm doing wrong.

First off - I have a cisco console cable. I had to go buy adaptors so it would fit on the back of my laptop. I purchased a db9 to VGA(I think that is db15) adaptor. Is this where I went wrong?

So I have everything connected properly and when I go through the 9600, 8N1 setting I get nothing. The LED on the routers do come on when powered up.

I know I can do a password recovery but is there any way else to reset the router with my current problem?

I can't call the guy I bought it from until Monday (Normal Duty Hours)so I'd like to have exhausted on measures by then so I know it's a router problem.

I'm hoping this isn't the problem but I can't find anywhere that says I can use a db9 to db15 adaptor. Everything says db9 to db25. The problem is I don't have a db25 connection on my laptop

I would suggest the following.
You should be using the following:
DB-9 addapter labeled terminal on PC com port. RJ-45 rollover console cable (Wires reversed on one side when holding side by side). Com port set at 9600-n-8 no flow control.
If it does not respond it is possible someone has changed the baud rate on the router. Disconnect yor session, change the baud rate to the next spped and re-start session. Repeat and try all speeds until you get a response.

Based on your first post... the problem is with the adapter you purchased. "db9 to VGA" If you have a newer laptop it may not have a COM port on the rear... I know many models that have come out for the past 3 or 4 years do not have one. At my office we use Dell and the Dell Inspiron line of laptops do not have a COM port just the USB ports.. I think a USB to COM port adapter will work and they are available from Office Depot and Office Max and most computer stores. I had to purchase a Dell Latitude to get a COM port on the rear. From what you posted it looks like you are trying to talk to the router through your VGA port and that will not work. You may have to either use a desktop PC that has a COM port or get a USB to COM adapter (USB to db9) and then you can use Hyperterminal with the setting listed above on the COM port attached to the Cisco console cable. Even if someone has changed the baud rate you might see something returned when you hit the return key. If you do get gibberish then try other baud rate settings. You have to get the COM port issue corrected first.

Thanks for the replies.

I did figure out that it was a mistake to use my VGA as a Comm port. I used my normal PC and everything looks good.

Also - thanks for the heads up about the USB to DP9 adaptor. I'll go look for that today.
