Yes you can use a vga monitor on a SUN Server and you can use a serial terminal. For the monitor you will need an adaptor to match the SUN vidio port. The serial port on the back of the 450 aclually has 2xserial ports connected into it and you usually get a 2 into 1 cable to split out the seperate ports. This means you can run a serial terminal as a console and also connect a UPS without needing extra serial ports.

You can use hyperterminal to connect to the serial port. You need to have proper cable and D15 to D9 converter also. You can also use secureCRT(eval copy available on to connect instead of hperterminal.
setting for the com port should be
1. bits per second 9600
2. data bits 8
3. Parity none
4. Stop bits 1
5. flowcontrol hardware

If you want to use a vga monitor you should buy Sun 13W3-M to VGA HD15-M cable. You can find it on ebay.

If the Os is already installed you can use a X-windows software and cross-cable to get the GUI interface. You can even telnet if you've a cross cable connected to E450 and your laptop.
