Hi all:

Got a SunFire V480 with no OS on it. Need to load the OS.
The HW is rack mounted and has a RSC card. Serial, Modem, and Network.

I am using a HP 70096 terminal that is connected to the serial port on the RSC card but still no prompt.

How do I connect a console to this server?

More info. All of the ports on the RSC card are RJ-45.
I am using a RJ-45 cable plugged into the RSC serial port and the other end of the cable is connected to a DB25 serial adaptor so I can plug into the HP term.

First of all the RSC requires the O/S to be loaded first and then the RSC packages installed.

So first connect your HP terminal to the "serial port on the
V480. This port is on the back of the V480, second from the bottom. Just look closely you will see the port notations.

Pin out of the Serial RJ-45:

1 rts
2 dtr
3 TD
4 grd
5 grd
6 RD
7 dsr
8 cts

Normally you will only need pins 3,5,6
V480 HP TERM (if DB25 is used) If DB9 is used)
3 2 2
6 3 3
4,5 7 5
