I'm considering a career change from chemical engineering to some field in computer science. I have a great love for computers and in my job I've basically performed the role of a software engineer for the past six years. The downside is that the only computer language I know is propritary to the company I work for, so I can't really market myself based on that knowledge. (Personally I feel that the language is *almost* irrevelant in as much as you're able to meet deadlines, serve the customer, and document, implement, and maintain your software solution.) Anyway, given my penchant for computers (I'm the alpha geek around here) I'm thinking about getting a Masters in Computer Science.
I ask the group here these questions:
1. Where would a masters degree in CS lead; What sorts of career opportunities are there and where would they lead? Would I just end up being a programmer for life?
2. Are online master's degrees frowned upon? There are two programs from "division 1" schools that I've seen in this area, one at Colorado State and the other at the University of Illinois. Should I am for one of those programs or in the end does it really matter what school I choose?
Thanks in advance!
