I've been asked to change the default root password on our CMS system and I want to know if there is anything I need be careful of in doing so. I also want to know if the root account is referenced in other places where I might have to update the password. My gut feel is that I don't need to worry but I want to cover my bases. Thanks!

Consequenses of changing the "root" password...? Forgetting what you made it....LOL, that's the biggest problem just make sure it's one that you know and is written somewhere in case something happens to you...Other than that no problem !!!
I'll usually set up an additional login with root permissions and change the root login password with that login. Just in case something happens.
