Hi

I ahve Microsoft SQL server management studio 2005 loaded on my works laptop. I want to be able to use the studio locally, but it does not recognise my local laptop as a sql server.

Is there anyway I can set it so it as a database engine and I can use databses locally.

I dont have the CD files and dont want to uninstall it so any ideas please.

Thanks

I'm not quite sure I follow you. But for you to have databases on your laptop, you would have to choose Database Engine from the install disk. It sounds like you only installed the Client Tools.

So get the install disks that you used to install the Client Tools and when it runs, choose the Database Engine for install.

However, I'm not sure you can install the Database Engine on all versions of Windows.

Hi

I have unistalled all versions of SQl now and loaded SQL Server Management Studio Express.

It appears to load ok, but when I go to log in

Server type : Databse Engine
Server Name:
Authentication : Windows Authentication
Username kir-wks-007\Colin

The problem now is it cannot locate a local server name.

Any ideas please (I will also post this as a new post)

Thanks

SQL Server Management Studio" and "SQL Server Database Engine" are 2 separate things. The database engine is what stores the data. The management studio allows you to manage the database and change the data.

To see if the database engine is installed, do this:

Click Start -> Run
type: Services.msc
Click OK

Scroll down to "SQL SERVER".

If you don't see any services named SQL Server, then the database engine is not installed.

You need to run the installer and pick Database Engine.
