Hi there,

Not sure whether I'm meant to post this issue on this section of the forum but I can't see any other place more appropriate.

I've got a a normal desktop PC over in our Shanghai branch that connects to our regional domain. However for some reason it cannot ping the local domain controller yet it can ping other local servers and Sydney servers. The reason why this is a concern is because user folders for that branch is stored on that local DC.

I've tried removing the re-adding the PC to the domain but still the same thing?. So the thing confusing me is how come it can't ping to just that local DC, every other servers are fine to ping. Any clues to why this may happen and what I need to do to resolve this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Check the firewall settings for ICMP traffic on the DC.

When you say that it is trying to ping the DC, is it pinging by name, DNS name, or IP address? If it is one of the first two, does the name resolve to an address? Is that address correct? If it is not correct, check your "hosts" and "lmhosts" files on that PC to see if there is an entry for that server.

If the address is correct, try doing a "tracert" to that address and see if there is a breakdown in connectivity. Does the traffic follow the expected route? Check the routing table on the PC via "route print" and see if there is a static/persistent route for that IP address that is misdirecting packets.

Once you have gotten through those steps, you should have a pretty good idea where the breakdown is.
