Connection to network delayed on booting up, after removal of spyware

Hi everyone, thank you in advance for taking the time to read my post and hopefully offer some advice!

I tend to try and keep on top of spyware by using adaware regularly, but the last 2 months I admit it, I've been slacking a little. The other day I opened up adaware and after a minute it shut my computer down. It did this a few times until i managed to stop the scan about 30 seconds in and quarantine what it found before it shut down. After I rebooted, adaware no longer shut down my computer, and I was able to quarantine the other 100 or so files (tracking cookies mostly!) it found, then I discovered that I could no longer connect to the internet. After restoring everything I quarantined and browsing for a while I read up on that awful SAHAgent.exe and how it works, but I seem to have removed it.
However, part of my 'fix' was through a file a friend advised I used: Winsockxpfix.exe which I *think* I downloaded from this site: So after having removed all of the sahagent components I could find and not being able to connect again afterwards, I used this program to repair what SaHAgent damaged and after about 20 seconds (my friend told me it was renewing my IP address or something) my computer was connected to the internet again.

Unfortunately though, each time I boot up my machine, it appears to take a while to fully finish everything. Let me try and explain: I turn on my machine, and it boots up, comes to the desktop screen after I select the user, and before the SAHAgent problems about 2 days ago, MSN and other internet reliant programs that launch on start up would immediately start to open, and my computer took about 3 seconds to finish everything and produce the start up sound of 5 notes or so after displaying my desktop image. Now, however, my computer appears to boot up normally, and after the usual 3 seconds I can do things like right click on start and select explore and run a startuplist check program - but it takes another minute or so for my computer to produce the 5 note noise it makes after booting up, and up until this point i can't select network connections in control panel, or access the internet (or at least I can double click them, they just don't respond/sort of freeze till my computer has fully done whatever it now does to take the extra minute or 2). My computer doesn't sound like it's doing anything in this extra time it takes to finish booting up, what I mean is that the sounds produced by the hard drive and fans all die down as they normally should, it's just taking an extra minute or two to connect to the net it seems.

Also, every time I turn on or reboot my machine, it takes me to a black screen saying that Windows did not start up properly, perhaps due to added soft/hardware, a power cut etc, would I like to start up in normal or safe mode. Starting up in normal mode, excluding the delay it experiences in connecting to the network, does not seem to produce any other problem. This has also only happened since I removed SAHAgent and its components.

Sorry for the long winded explanation, I just didn't want to miss anything that might help solve the problem ;)

I run SpwareGuard, SpywareBlaster, Spyware Doctor, Adaware, SpyBot, SpySweeper and McAfee Anti Virus. They are finding nothing on my machine. Someone suggested that something is hogging all the resources which is causing the delay, but ctrl alt del does also not work until the connection to the network is complete.

This is really frustrating, and I would appreciate anything that anyone has to suggest!

Hi there, go to the Internet Connections, righ click on your Network (LAN) icon, there click on the TCP/IP and go to expanded (Extended options), there you can enter a static IP adress (192.168.1.1 for example SubnetMask is always 255.255.255.0) click ok, exit and reboot...

as windows is loading, it gives all NIC cards a dynamic IP adress, this takes sometime as it scans for Networks...

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

Thank you for the quick response!

I have already tried doing as you suggested, and unfortunately experience the same problem.

My computer has not had this delay for the past 3 years or so, it's only been since removing SAHAgent a few days ago that I've had the problem, so what I don't understand is why it's taking a HUGE amount longer to scan for networks now?

Gah, the people that create these things are evil, evil, evil!

Basically, when you install the OS (XP) it only installs a few WinSocks... when you run the Winsockfixxp this will install quite a few more...

you may wanna do a Repair install, this basically resets your Hardware and Registry, while it leaves the Programs installed intact...

or go to the Command Window, type in ' SFC /scannow ' (without the quotes) and have your XP CD ready at hand, this will scan the OS for damaged/corrupted and non-standard Systemfiles and will replace them...

Thanks again for the tips. I have already done the SFC command and it turned up no problems. I'm at the stage where I am ready to reformat my computer anyway, so I will try the repair install first. Crossing my fingers!
