connection to net from unix system

hi,
i have a 4.1BSD UNIX system . i lso have a mail account with an isp. i want to connect to the net. i have changed some of the system files as follows-
ttys
ttys.conf
ppp.sys
remote

after that i tried the command
ppp vsnl
here the system dials out to the modem but fter tht i get a messge saying 'Network Down'. what should i do to get connected to the net.Please help?
I need this for my B.E. Project
