Hi,

I have had probs with IE6. I used the IE clearance tool to wipe out all trace of IE. Re-installed IE6 but now dont see the icon in sys tray which tells you you are connected. I have checked the 'show icon' box in internet connection properties but for some reason it has disappeared. So now I cant disconnect from internet.

See Steve Winograd, MS-MVP, notes here: And these notes:
The Internet Gateway notification icon is problematic: make certain that the Win2k services entry shows that ICS is running. Make certain that you have installed and are running the SSDP Discovery Client Service, and UPnP service.

Make certain your firewall allows traffic on port 1900 in both directions.

Umm...I have gone thru your suggestions and all seems to be running.
The other problem is when I go to my Network Connection it tells me that I am disconnected even though I am connected. The only way I can disconnect is unplug the modem!!

Wish I never tried to sort out what started as a minor problem, which I still have, namely when a link is clicked a new window doesn't open!

For the link issue, try my 78% of the time fix:

Open a new notepad session, to be called IE_fix.cmd, and copy/paste the below:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

Save the file, then double click IE_fix.cmd and answer the prompts. Ignore any error messages.

Reboot and test again.

Thanks for that bcastner. I have tried that fix before to no avail.
What is weird is that if I have 5 windows open then the problem doesn't exist.

I might go back to square one and reformat and reload everything. A day's wasted time!!
