I upgraded with a 56k modem, but my connection speed never increased from the 26

Make sure you have the latest and correct drivers for your OS and modem.

Make sure your connect speed is set to highest and that modem passes self-diagnostic under Control Panel.

Make sure your ISP provides 56K support.

If all this is valid, the physical quality of your phone line may not be up to it. This depends on the wire itself, the number of phone extensions on it and the particular voltage drop caused by each brand of phone (usually 5 is max allowed, but try to have fewer), distance from telephone company switching office, etc. Also be aware that 53K is the highest speed allowed by FCC.

In my last home, dialup speed was 44K with 56K modem. My current home can't manage better than 31K. My dad gets 49K consistently where he lives, however, and in a much older home.

I went to broadband. Newposter

that is all true but to add, you may want to find out the type of server versus your modem type. The protocol the server is may have something to do with it but I doubt thats your problem. Either way it can be helped with modem strings.

Let me guess you bought a HSP modem and you have Win 98.
