I can't seem to figure this out.

If I use the 'mysql' or the 'mysqladmin' command, all is fine.

If I use ANYthing else, it gets 10061-Connection refused.

I can't telnet to localhost on port 3306, and I can't telnet from another computer on the LAN using port 3306.

There is a hardware firewall, but both machines are in behind the firewall. There is also a third machine on the LAN using Debian and mysql works fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I used apt-get to remove the package and reinstall it, but the problem remains. I've also tried reinstalling Debian. The problem remains. I'm out of ideas.

I used the same method to install mysql as I did on the other machine on the LAN, but for some strange reason, I can't get this machine to respond.

Well, I figured out my own problem.

In the Debian package, by default listening on the lan is off. (Although, I don't remember this the last time I installed it.)

I commented out the following line in my.cnf file in /etc/mysql:

Code:
skip-networking

...and now all is well.

It's amazing how leaving the problem for a couple hours helps to fix it.
