Connection problems with Linksys Wireless G

I recently installed a Linksys Wireless G broadband router (WRT54G)and adapter (WUSB54G) so my daughter could use our Comcast broadband connection. I was able to get her set up so she could connect, but several recurring problems exist:

1. I can get her to connect successfully, and she surfs happily. But after closing her browser and/or IM sessions and trying to connect again later, she isn't able to. The signal is there and very strong (80% or more) but she gets no internet.

2. Both computers can't use the internet at the same time. If one is using it and the other opens a web browser or web application, the first connection gets excrutiatingly slow (far worse than dialup ever was). Also, when this happens, the computer that has slowed down can't access any sites or services that require authentication. I can't download email or access https secure sites.

I have made sure that only she is able to use the signal by restricting access to only her mac address, and we are using WEP security. Her PC is using Windows XP and mine is still using 98SE.

Can anyone offer any insight on what might be going on? Is it the router, or is my cable signal just too weak?

Tell me more about how the Win 98 computer is attached to the internet.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

The Win 98 pc is attached to the internet via the cable hookup. The computer's network adapter is a Linksys Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet (NC100 v2) if that helps.

I should add that it's a wired connection with the cable going into the router first, then to the PC.

Any other information I can provide to help in troubleshooting?
