Using a Belkin router on one end and connecting to a computer on the other end (three different NIC's tried) the computer never connects.

it is unable to receive an IP from the router. I have crimped the cable in a simple to remember pattern...not the "official" pattern. Will this effect the ability of longer cables to communicate? The shorter cables connect fine when crimped in the same way.

Will inferior Cat5e cabling (from Home Depot) cause problems at longer distances?

I had an old 5 port hub around and I tried sticking that in the middle, but it didn't fix it. Does a hub repeat like a switch?

If you have mismatched conductors you are at risk. Transmit and receive are assumed to be on a twisted pair each and using other that the pair throws the generated noise out of the limits.

Cat5 is Cat5.

The answer seems to be yes. it is called Unsheilded Twisted Pair cable (UTP) if you are not using pairs on pins 1 and 2 and pins 3 and 6, it will not work very well. the longer the distance it is not a twisted pair, the worse it works.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

two cents...
Aside from the other comments about maintaining wire pairs.

One client purchased/used HDs cat5 pvc cable to wire his office. Never have I had such a problem getting wires to pass cat5 certification. With careful termination,I was able to get all the wires to pass, but very marginally. I checked the ceiling wire runs, no deviation from cat 5 recommended pratices,..I will not buy Home Depot's wire .

Chernobyl disaster..a must see pictorial

Be very carefull with the diagram given in the cirrus link above.

That is not for CAT 5 cabling

CAT 5 uses pins 1&2 and one pair and 3&6 as the other so, if memory servers me correctly, the colours (for a "straight" connector should be:

1 White/Orange
2 Orange
3 White/Green
4 Blue
5 White/Blue
6 Green
7 White/Brown
8 Brown

A crossover cable for connecting 2 PC's back to back should be wired like that at one end and as follows at the other

1 White/Green
2 Green
3 White/Orange
4
5
6 Orange
7
8

4,5,7 and 8 should not care as they're not used.
