We had someone resign and I had to run a report for someone that this person had created. However the following happened.

After clicking the run button the dialog box to select a data source appeared.
I choose the Tab that read File Data Source, then selected the database
Then I was prompted for the password and after entering the password the dialog box to select a data source appeared again
This time I chose the database from the Machine Data Source tab and was prompted for the password again
I entered the password and the report started running
When the report got through several records it stopped and the dialog box to select a data source appeared again, I am sure this is because there is a subreport in the report, again I chose the database from the Machine Data Source tab and was prompted for the password again
The report then ran to completion

I saved the report as something else, closed it, opened and ran it without having to do all of the above.

After this I then tested the original report but changed the steps. For step 2 above I used the Machine Data Source instead of the File Data Source and got a message box that stated that the connection failed, there was an invalid SQL State SQL Server Error: 0 connection string attribute,SQL State Connection failed ,SQL Server Error: 4002 login failed (is not the extact message)

Any ideas on what was going on here. Why would I even get the Select Data Source box?

Thanks

You're right. This is to do with the connectivity of the subreports. The connection details were not saved when the report was promoted to whatever delivery medium you're using. When you saved it to another file, this was most likely after you had specified the data source for the original run.
