Connection dropping

I'm using a DSL modem from Bellsouth (forgive me, I don't know too much about the details) and whenever we have a storm, I disconnect the phone lines and shut it down. I got fried a year ago, so I'm cautious. However, after reconnecting it, and restarting everything, I can't stay connected for more than five minutes. After about six hours, though, everything is fine.

Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks!

As a guess it is a Westell 1200. You might want to look at the line quality and logs of the modem. Here is how you can see them:
