I have read that you can connect to the Legend system through WinSPM by dialing "*10" using the computer modem. Is this correct? Where do you make the connections, and is there a special cable or just a standard phone line? And, what do I need to know to make this connection and make it work properly? :-D

Well, there are a few ways you can connect. If you have tip/ring (basic telephone) ports, you just use a standard phone line from your computer's modem port, to the 012, or 016 T/R card, and set WinSPM to dial *10. If you do not have a T/R, then you will need to purchase a 355AF adapter. You will plug that into a COM port on yout computer, then you will run an 8 wire cord from the adapter, to the ADMIN port on the Legend Processor, and that should work.

Okay, thanks for the response.

Where can I get this 355AF adapter?? How much will it set me back?

If you order it from Avaya, you are talking about around $80. You can also get them from Graybar, for about $40. Look in a phone book and see if there is a Graybar in your area.

Other posts show you how to build your own.

I may have other folks available to provide this as well.

Don't forget, the 355 is a 25 Pin device, your laptop/desktop usually has a 9 pin serical connection, thus, an adapter will be required.

don't need the 355a adapter. here is the pinout for a cable that i use all the time. works great.

Those 355 adapters can be pinout copied, BUT they are more than just an adapter. There is some circuitry in there that is supposed to protect the phone system's admin port. Electrically there is no problem, but the other stuff inside does something, and the 40 bucks it a little cheaper than PBX damage.

I am having trouble connecting manually with high speed internal modems at 1200/2400 baud. Using external US Robotics works fine, but none of my internal modems work. Is there a setting on internal modems to allow them to connect properly?

I have had some Internals that were flaky at best.

Just be sure you've followed Avaya's WIN SPM set up.

I've always used internals, but like MM said, some are flaky. Don't spend a lot of time, just try a different modem.

wow, I'm just calling my remote maintenance number that AVAYA uses to remotely administer the switch, setting a bunch of commas to allow the switch to answer and then *10. I can manage the switch from anywhere. I didn't know I could just connect through a standard T/R port.

Using external US Robotics Modem is the only way I could get my WinSPM to connect. Tried three internals and none would work.

The componets in the AT&T 355 series adapters are surge and overvoltage suppression devices to prevent standard battery from damaging terminal devices. So as long as you don't plug a phone line or the like into it no problem...

Hope this helps!
