We are planning to upgrade to SQL2000 and Macola 7.6.300 (currently SQL7/7.5.103f). We also have many older 233MHZ Win98SE workstations currently running Macola. Will these still be able to connect to Macola after the upgrades or will they need to connect through terminal services?

Macola hasn't supported win98 for quite a while. Since you are going to a current server OS & current macola code, you would be trying to run on an untested platform. Win98 was a pain starting with 103f. I'd either purchase new workstations (a 233 would drive me crazy unless I was sitting next to the coffee machine and had unlimited time to surf the net or chat on the phone) or buy a decent terminal server. Since the programs load locally, you'd get a lot of bang for your buck using TS or Citrix with a state of the art machine.

In checking Exact's current platforms document on their support page, Windows 98SE is supported through at least 7.6.200 and the code between 7.6.200 and 7.6.300 is very similar. The document is 00.690.748

However, it would also be a good time to rotate those old computers out with new ones that would have XP Pro on them plus would better utilize the users time since the workstations would be much faster.

Only Citrix 2000 SP3 really forced you to install the Macola programs locally on the Citrix server.

Another reason to opt for terminal server is that you configure the client install only once for all users. If you go for the win98SE local install, you have to deal with 10 machines that may each have a different problem instead of one TS. Once you configure TS, it's done for anyone who logs in.

My reference to the programs loading locally had to do with the concept that macola loads the programs into RAM on the local machine. So, the speed of the workstation has more to do with the performance of the ERP rather than the speed, memory & configuration of the server.

I've spent hours trying to get win98 workstations to work properly with newer macola versions. As cheap as decent hardware is now, you'll get more value for investing in hardware rather than trying to retrofit a 233 machine into this mix. Just my 2 cents.

Windows 98 is still supported with 7.6.300x, but it has to be Second Edition, otherwise you'll recieve "cannot call program winman" or "cannot call program macmem" messages upon launching Macola.

I do have to agree, though, that 233s are something of a dog and if you can upgrade, do so.

Be aware, however, that XP should be XP pro, not home, because Macola won't run on XP home without a patch.
