I'm trying to connect a new laptop running Vista Home Premium to a desktop machine running XP Pro over a home network with a d-link DI-524 router. Both computers are in the same work group.
Initially, I could not see the desktop at all. However, I've run through the various similar questions in Tek-tips and gotten to the point where I can now see the desktop in the Vista network. I can also connect via remote desktop to the desktop machine from the Vista machine, and I can ping the desktop successfully.
However, when i try to explore the hard drive on the desktop machine from the vista laptop, I get back a message that windows cannot access the desktop. "Diagnose" produces a message that "Windows sent the request to the DNS server and the server responded that the name was unknown." It may help to know that file sharing is turned on and I can access the desktop from other XP machines and a Mac running OS X. In the past I've connected successfully with a different Vista laptop.
Thanks to anyone who can help me with next steps to resolve the issue.
