Connecting two routers togther

Hi, i am trying to hook up a second router to my first one because i am out of ports. what i did is connect the second router to the "uplink" port on the first rounter. Then (on the 2nd router) i Disabled DHCP and changed the IP asddress to 168.92.1.2 However it still does not work.

I am using a standard RJ45 cable to connect the routers togther. What i mean by "standard" is that the cable was being used to hook up one of my computers to the primary router. Is that the problem? that i need a different type of cabe to make the link to the 2nd router? Or am i doing something else wrong?

here are my router types:
Primary - Linksys BEFSR41 (1 WAN port, 4 LAN ports, 1 UPLINK port)

Secondary - Linksys BEFSR41 (1 Internet port, 4 LAN ports)

i dont know why they have different lables/types of ports, i guess one is newer or something.

Try a crossover cable where pins 1,2,3 and 6 are crossed.

Your setup would be less complicated if you were to use a plain switch or hub with 1 router, but nontheless, this should still work. A crossover cable shouldn't be needed if 1 uplink port is used. You will not be able to use the standard port 1 on the 'primary' router because this is the same port as the uplink port (just wired differently). On the secondary router, in addition to disabling the DHCP server, make sure that you only use the lan ports. This wil give you a total of 6 lan ports available - 3 on each router.


Sidenote: WAN (Wide Area Network) & Internet ports are equivalent. If there's no uplink port on the second router, probably all 4 ports are auto-uplinking (meaning that they will crossover/uplink automatically as needed), the documentation should say something to this effect.
