my wife had some down time at an appointment recently and decided to see if a public wifi was available; one was, it connected but when she went to connect to the internet it would not!

is there something i need to set on you laptop to enable her to gain full internet connectivity?

she has no problems connecting to our home wireless connection.

When she connected the public access, did it hand her an IP address?

she said no window popped up. it just showed the icon in the tray as Connected, but IE said it could not display any pages.

Next time she's in the vicinity of that system, get her to open a Command Prompt window and type ipconfig /all and see if an IP Address is being issued.

Also check in the computer that under Internet Protocol it is set to Obtain an IP Address automatically and also Obtain DNS Server address automatically in the wireless connection properties.

In Control Panel, Internet Properties, Connections tab, LAN Settings, tick Automatically detect settings.

Also look to see if it is showing it as an Infrastruture or Ad Hoc network in the wireless network dialog box.
