Connecting to oracle

hi all,
can anybody help me to connect to remote oracle database server to retrive data.
i tried OCI but it has limitation , it needs oracle client environment to run.
moreover if i change user , it doesn't work at all.

i'm working on linux platform.

then i tried C-perl to connect to oracle using DBI:BD
but it also didn't work

please guide me to how i connect to oracle
