Narrative: User has a remote office that needs to connect to a Novell 4.11 [running IPX/SPX] LAN from a remote location. Once connected the user will run 2 applications. One is a windows based program and the second is MS DOS based accounting. The software developer has proclaimed that the DOS accounting “windows” is in beta and will be available by July/August 2001. The remote location has telephone dialup via Internet for another 90 days before moving to a new location where cable modem will be available. The longer-term plan is VPN [box to box Sonic firewall]. The temporary or short-term plan is VPN Client to Sonic Firewall and then the 4.11 server.

Questions: What are the steps necessary to allow the remote site to connect via the Internet and run the application as described?

Server side:
Novell 4.11 – Hub – Sonic Firewall – Cable Modem

Remote Side:
Workstation class system – 56K modem – VPN client software – Telephone service (copper wire

You'll simplify your problem a lot if you upgrade the server to Netware 5, and have IP as a built-in protocol, rather than trying to encapsulate IPX over a VPN tunnel.

I would agree, upgrade to nw5, use bordermanager client vpn and its that easy. It is not a difficult process to setup the vpn bit. Lee Smith
