We are considering setting up a mySQL database on a linux server (don't know which flavor of linux yet).

I use crystal 8.5 on windows 2000. Are there any issues with connecting to the tables from windows to linux? Will we need any sort of 3rd party software to see the tables?

thank you

Hi,
You ability to connect to that dataabse is dependant on whether any ODBC drivers exist for windows that can access that Linux database...( or if there is a native driver for Windows..)

Not sure, try Google..

The OS doesn't matter providing the database is exposed no the network.

Almost every shop runs Oracle on Unix, with mainly Windows users.

There may be some considerations, and keep in mind that MySQL is what I term a not ready for primetime database.

IF your database needs are modest, Oracle has just released a 4 GB max free database (version XE, and there's a Linux32 version), which is otherwise not limited.

If your needs are reasonably modest, you'll be much happier with Oracle.

Thank you, that was my main concern (different OS's)

What we have now is in MS Access. I don't see it getting terribly large, but who knows. There is a lot of old junk that will not be moved so it will end up smaller at first.

Interesting about Oracle, didn't they just recently purchase a company who was supplying a part of MySQL?

I will look at the free Oracle DB as well, thank you.

Getting out of MS Access is a good idea as well,MySQL is safer than Access, however Oracle should be much better.

I would think that Microsoft would be matching this with SQL Server.

Oracle is obviously worried about their market share.
