Connecting to Merlin Magix via modem. 1

I recently purchased a used Merlin Magix for my office. I have no phone experience and am lost as to how to connect to the system with winSPM. Does anyone know of a step by step guide of how to connect to the system by modem for programing?

Purchased a 355 adapter and tried a direct connect but keep getting a message that it cannot connect, to check the cable.
Tested the cable and it is fine. Any ideas or software configuration that I might be missing.

Merlin documentation leaves a little to be desired for a novice.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Using the modem to connect requires that you dial in with your modem, answer the call, and transfer to *10. Or you could set up a line as remote access, but you would have to be able to access programming to do that !?!

Download the manual for the system at

so that you can read up on your system, but you may find that this is not a DIY project!

I don't know where to start here, but lets assume your in the same building as the Merlin.

If your using a laptop right at the Merlin you of course need SPM software loaded. Once you open the SPM software you need to add a "Direct" site, set it to enabled,enter the com port and set the baud rate at 2400. Off the computer com port (with an adapter) goes the 355. Then I just use a 4 pair mounting cord off one of the phones to the "admin" port of the processor.

Can you get that far?

The other thing to consider is making sure the COM PORT in SPM is the COM PORT you are using in your laptop.
