Not for most DSL connections, since they involve PPPoE. XP has this protocol management built-in, but not Win9x or 2000.
Instead of software, the other option is to purchase a router. Not only will it handle PPPoE, but it will also give you an additional layer of security (much needed I might add).

You could always uninstall the vendor software AFTER you have everthing up and running smoothly. Lots of people do this with the SBC Yahoo! software required to autenticate and set up the initial account.
If it's a rental modem, you can ask your isp for a change of modem. Sympatico, for instance, has SpeedStream 5200 modems that include built-in firmwares.
Like a router, you could let the firmware make to connection for you and not use the software.
Call your isp and ask for a modem along those lines. Or get one from a outside source!
